Alberta driving laws you might not know

Some of Alberta’s traffic laws rarely come up in driving lessons, but you can still be charged for breaking them. Here are the ones the Driver’s Guide says every driver should know.p. 94

The short version

  • Paid to carry people or provide a service with your vehicle? You need a Class 4 licence.p. 14
  • Nobody may ride on the outside of your vehicle, including the open box of a pickup. You and the rider can both be charged.p. 95
  • Driving without care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for others, can make you guilty of careless driving.p. 95
  • Never cut through a funeral procession: yield until it has passed.p. 105

Driving for pay: when you need a Class 4

You need a Class 4 licence when the vehicle’s owner or driver, or the driver’s employer, is being paid for the service the vehicle provides.p. 14

You don’t need a Class 4 to drive a private passenger vehicle now and then, for:p. 14

  • payment for the kilometres drivenp. 14
  • straight repayment of costs for the trip, such as gas, parking, gate passes and tollsp. 14
  • driving only your own family, members of your household, or people you are legal guardian forp. 14

A Class 5 licence can’t be used to carry passengers for hire: Your Alberta driver’s licence: codes, renewal, registration and insurance.

Passengers, mirrors and lanes

  • Nobody rides on the outside of your vehicle, and that includes the open box of a pickup truck. The driver and the rider can both be charged.p. 95
  • If your inside rear view mirror is blocked, you must have an outside mirror on each side.p. 95
  • Don’t drive across two lanes on a highway, unless conditions make keeping to a single lane impractical.p. 95
  • In a residential area, don’t drive in a way that disturbs residents between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.p. 95
  • People under 14 may not drive a tractor or any self-propelled farm equipment on a highway.p. 94
  • Driving without care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for others, can lead to a careless driving conviction.p. 95

Funeral processions

  • In the procession: you may go through a stop sign or red light without stopping, with your headlights on, but only if you’re closely following the vehicle ahead and it’s safe.p. 105
  • Meeting a procession: don’t pass through it. Yield the right-of-way until it has passed.p. 105

Off-highway vehicles

Watch for all-terrain vehicles, snowmobiles and similar vehicles near the highway or crossing it, and be cautious around them.p. 105

Licence ages and air brakes

  • Class 5-GDL: you must be at least 16, and under-18s need a parent’s or guardian’s consent.p. 13
  • Class 5 (non-GDL): you must be at least 18.p. 13
  • Air brakes: driving a vehicle with air-only or combined air and hydraulic brakes needs an air brake endorsement (Q), earned by completing an approved Alberta air brake course.p. 15
