Your Alberta driver’s licence: codes, renewal, registration and insurance

Your licence comes with responsibilities beyond the road: carrying it, keeping it current, reporting medical conditions, and keeping your vehicle registered and insured.p. 15p. 20

Checked against the Driver’s Guide (Spring 2026) on .

The short version

  • Carry your licence whenever you drive. A peace officer can ask for your licence, insurance and registration.p. 15
  • Alberta no longer mails renewal reminders (except to Albertans with disabilities). Renewing on time is your responsibility.p. 20
  • Condition code A means you must wear glasses or contact lenses to drive.p. 18p. 19
  • Your insurer’s pink card must be shown when you register a vehicle and when a peace officer asks.p. 20

Condition and endorsement codes

A condition code shows a special requirement, such as needing glasses or regular medical exams. An endorsement shows extra training, like a school bus course, or permission to drive a vehicle with a special feature, such as air brakes. Yours are on the front of the licence, in the Cond/End section.p. 18

Renewing, replacing and updating

  • Renewing: reminders are no longer mailed, except to Albertans with disabilities. Sign up for free electronic reminders through E-registry or MyAlberta, and renew on or before the expiry date.p. 20
  • Lost, stolen, destroyed or unreadable: apply for a replacement at a registry agent right away. If it was stolen, report it to police and bring a copy of the police report.p. 19
  • New name, address or class: update it at a registry agent. The law requires your licence information to be current, and you may need to show identification.p. 20

Find a registry agent: alberta.ca registry agent lookup.

What a Class 5 licence lets you drive

With a Class 5 licence you may drive:p. 14

  • a vehicle with only two axles, and a mopedp. 14
  • a recreational vehicle with up to three axlesp. 14
  • a two-axle vehicle towing a trailer without air brakesp. 14

A Class 5 licence does not allow:p. 14

  • a motorcycle, except for learningp. 14
  • a vehicle seating more than 15 while carrying anyone besides the driverp. 14
  • carrying passengers for hirep. 14
  • a vehicle with air brakes, unless your supervisor has an air brake endorsementp. 14

Driving with the wrong licence class is against the law, and so is letting someone without the proper class drive your vehicle.p. 19

Medical conditions

You must disclose any medical or physical condition that could affect your ability to drive safely, such as diabetes, seizure disorders, heart or breathing conditions, sleep disorders or loss of mobility. If you have such a condition, you must submit a Driver Medical Intake Form completed by a doctor or nurse practitioner.p. 17

  • Drivers 75 or older applying for or renewing a Class 7, 6, 5 or 3 licence need a completed Driver Medical Intake Form, and their vision is assessed at a registry agent.p. 17
  • At any age, you must provide medical documentation when asked, and a road test or other assessment may be required.p. 17
  • If you don’t submit the form when required, your application or renewal can be denied, or your licence suspended.p. 18
  • Driving without disclosing a condition that affects safety can expose you to liability in a collision; courts may treat it as negligence.p. 18

Registration and insurance

  • Every motor vehicle and trailer on Alberta roads must be registered.p. 20
  • Under 18? A parent or guardian must also sign the registration application, unless you can prove you’re married or self-supporting. If they withdraw consent, the plate and registration are suspended.p. 20
  • Licence plates stay with the owner, not the vehicle, and can’t be transferred to another person.p. 20
  • Every motor vehicle must have public liability insurance. Driving an uninsured vehicle is illegal.p. 20
  • Your insurer gives you a pink card (financial responsibility card): show it when you register a vehicle and when a peace officer asks.p. 20
