The Alberta Class 7 knowledge test: what to expect

You need to pass the knowledge test to get your Class 7 learner’s licence. It asks about safe driving practices, driving laws and road signs, and its questions are taken from the Driver’s Guide.p. 11

Where the test fits

A Class 7 learner’s licence is Stage One of Alberta’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. Every new driver goes through GDL, whatever their age.p. 10

To get a Class 7 learner’s licence, you must:p. 10

  • be 14 years of age or olderp. 10
  • pass a vision screeningp. 10
  • pass the knowledge test on the rules of the roadp. 10
  • have parental consent if you’re under 18p. 10
  • have valid identificationp. 10

If you’re under 18 and applying for the first time, a parent or legal guardian must come with you to the registry office, show proof of guardianship and sign a consent form.p. 16

After you pass

Take the knowledge test permit you bought for the test to a registry agent, so your driver’s licence is updated.p. 11

From then on you drive under the learner’s conditions: a supervising driver next to you, no driving from midnight to 5 a.m., no more passengers than seat belts and zero alcohol and drugs. Class 7 learner’s licence rules explains them all.p. 10
